Smart Hybrid cars can be categorized as mild-hybrid vehicles. The setup has an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and dual-battery setup. The technology uses the energy converted and saved through regenerative braking for Idle Stop Start and Torque Assist functions.

Idle Stop Start: Idle Stop Start function is an integral part of Smart Hybrid Technology. The function automatically turns off the engine when the car is an idle condition and once the car is ready to move, you have to just depress the clutch (or release the brake in automatic variants), and the ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) restarts the engine. The Idle Stop Start function ensures lower fuel consumption, thereby enhancing the fuel-efficiency.

Brake Energy Regeneration: In this, the ISG utilises the generated electricity to keep the dual-battery set-up charged. The kinetic energy produced is converted into electrical energy, which is stored in the dual battery set-up.

Torque Assist: In this function, the energy stored in the dual battery set-up is used by the ISG to assist the engine during acceleration. The Torque Assist function also helps in reducing the load on the engine and improves the overall driving performance of the car.
