The Key Components of Smart Hybrid Technology
Smart Hybrid cars comprise of an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and dual batteries, one being Li-Ion while the other a Lead-Acid unit.
ISG replaces the conventional alternator and serves two key purposes: -
⦁ Converting the kinetic energy produced by regenerative braking into electrical energy and then storing it in the dual-battery setup.
⦁ Idle Stop Start and Torque Assist functions

The first feature that makes this possible is the Idle Stop Start function. When a Maruti Suzuki Smart Hybrid car is at a red light or in traffic (at standstill) and optimal conditions are met, Idle Stop Start turns off the engine. As soon as you depress the clutch, the ISG uses the energy stored in the batteries to turn on the car in a quick and silent manner. When it comes to every-day driving, especially during peak hours, this function helps in saving fuel when the car is in idle.
Next comes the Torque Assist. In this motor function, the ISG again uses the energy stored in the advanced dual battery setup to supplement the engine power at the time of acceleration. In doing so, the Smart Hybrid technology decreases the load on the engine at that time, thereby enhancing fuel efficiency.
