3 Frequently Asked Questions about BS6 | Arenaworld

1st April 2020 is nothing short of historic for India’s automotive sector - the country entered into a new era of greener mobility with the implementation of BS6 norms. The switch to BS6 has been one of the most important decisions by the Indian Government to reduce vehicular pollution; BS6 petrol cars available in India are both cleaner and greener. Maruti Suzuki has worked in line with the Government’s objective and progressively upgraded its entire line-up to adhere to BS6 norms.

However, many car buyers still have queries about BS6. Let’s clear the air: -

Q1: What are BS6 norms?

⦁ The draft notification of Bharat Stage 6 emission standards for every major on-road vehicle category in the country was issued by the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on February 19, 2016.

⦁ These standards are applicable to two- and three-wheeled vehicles as well as to light- and heavy duty vehicles.

⦁ BS6 norms, which came into effect from 1st April 2020, have brought India at par with the European countries and the US.

Q2: What it means for us?

It means lesser emissions, cleaner cars. India decided to introduce BS6 for a lot of reasons, including the degradation of air quality in the cities. BS6 cars, in the long run, will help to substantially reduce NOx, Particular matter, and NMHC emissions which affect the health of the country’s citizens.

Q3: What are the advantages of BS6?

In addition to the benefits discussed above, the switch from BS4 to BS6 means 25% reduction of NOx emissions in petrol cars . BS6 cars release lower Carbon Monoxide (CO) as well.
