Maruti Suzuki to set up 12 “Automated Driving Test Centers” in the Capital

Dec 27, 2017

Initiative to support Delhi Government efforts to strengthen road safety

New Delhi, 27 December, 2017: Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) today entered into an agreement with the Government of NCT of Delhi to set up state-of-the-art Automated Driving Test Centres across 12 locations in the city. PR

A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed today between the Department of Transport, NCT of Delhi and MSIL.

As per the MoA, MSIL will set up Automated Driving Test Centres comprising scientifically laid driving test tracks, advanced high definition cameras and an integrated IT system, as approved by the Transport Department.

While Maruti Suzuki will set up the Centres and maintain them for three years, the Transport Department will conduct the tests and issue driving licenses to eligible applicants.

Salient features of Automated Driving Test Centers

  • Use of video analytics technology, making it completely automated
  • Camera set-up around the track and inside the car
  • Make the testing process fool-proof, transparent and efficient
  • Help eliminate the chances of human discretion

The Company will invest approximately Rs 15 crore. The Centres will be set up in phases, and handed over to the Transport Department. The commissioning of the Centres and their operation will be decided by the Transport Department.

The Automated Driving Test Centres will be equipped with advanced video analytic technology to check driving skills of the applicant. Currently, this assessment is done manually.

MSIL supports quality driving training through its network of nearly 430 Maruti Driving Schools, operated in partnership with its dealers across India. It also manages six IDTRS in partnership with state governments. These schools use driving simulators and employ trained instructors to impart training based on a theory-cum-practical curriculum.

In the first phase, these Automated Driving Test Centres will be set up at Hauz Khas, Shakur Basti, Raja Garden, Hari Nagar, Burari, Loni Road, Sarai Kale Khan, Rohini, Jharoda Kalan, Mayur Vihar Phase I , Surajmal Vihar and Dwarka.

About Maruti Suzuki’s Road Safety Initiatives:

As part of India’s effort to make roads safe and bring down accidents and fatalities, Maruti Suzuki contributes to all the 4Es (Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency care) of road safety. Maruti Suzuki vehicles are designed, engineered and extensively tested to meet advanced safety standards that seek to minimize injury to vehicle occupants as well as pedestrians, in the event of a crash. Maruti Suzuki supports enforcement and emergency care by creating customized ambulances, interceptors and patrol vehicles and offering them to police and enforcement agencies.

The Company’s most significant intervention is in education and awareness. More than 430 Maruti Driving Schools and six IDTRs across the country impart quality driving training to nearly 1.5 lakh new drivers annually. These centres use driving simulators, an advanced theory-cum-practical curriculum, high quality instructors and fully equipped vehicles for training. Maruti Suzuki sees driving training as an instrument of economic change and inclusion, with its year-round programs for truck drivers and tribal youth designed to bring them into the economic and social mainstream.

The Company’s specially created ‘Unnati’ program, offers driving training and soft skills for better employability to the underprivileged. It benefits nearly 1000 people annually, including young women. Maruti Suzuki, India’s highest selling and most loved car brand since its inception nearly 35 years ago, believes that contributing to road safety across the spectrum ensures the sustainability of its business while expressing gratitude to its wide range of stakeholders who support its success.
