Car-market leader Maruti Suzuki flagged off the sixth edition of the annual southern motorsport event ‘Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare 2014,’ from here today. Returning in its 6th edition, the seven day ‘motor rallying’ event will cover over 2000 kms around South India’s most exotic locales of Mysore, Shimoga, Chitradurga, Davangere, Bellary, Hospet, Hubli to conclude at Goa. Traversing through the scenic southern peninsula, the event is playing host to see the largest ever participation of 160 motorsport enthusiasts in 95 vehicles across the three groups- Ultimate Car, Ultimate Bike and Time-Distance- Speed (TSD).
Explaining the popularity of Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare, Mr. Manohar Bhat, Vice President, Marketing, Maruti Suzuki, said, “Designed to motivate and encourage motorsports enthusiasts from India and abroad, Maruti Suzuki has pioneered many motorsports events across the country. Like wide range of cars, we have several rally formats suited for amateurs and professionals. Rallies bring out the best in man and machine. The best teams and best machines make podium finish. Historically, our cars have done well and we are proud of their consistent performance.”
He adds, “Increasing participation of motorsports enthusiasts encourages us to strengthen the motorsports events. Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare in particular offers a unique rallying experience full of dirt, slush and tarmac.
Interestingly, participants for Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare are chosen strictly after their vehicles clear several security tests. They will compete with each other in 3 categories across Endurance, Ultimate Bike, and Ultimate Car. The rally culminates at Goa. The winners of rally will be felicitated at Goa, on August 10, 2014.
Besides, at least 10 Maruti Suzuki employees are also participating in the rally. Employees from different streams such as engineering, quality assurance, service etc participate as motorsport enthusiasts and some of them successfully even finish podium. The idea is to gain on the ground knowledge and enhance their capabilities.
Maruti Suzuki has been organizing some of the world’s toughest motorsport rallies such as Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya (North India) and Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm (West India). Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare was therefore designed to bring the joy of motorsports for people in southern India. Over the years, the company has seen an overwhelming response across all the formats, giving birth to India’s adventure motor sports stars such as Suresh Rana (nine times winner of Raid de Himalaya and three times winner of Desert Storm in Extreme Category, who targets to win his first Dakshin Dare title this year). Besides home teams from Bangalore such as Satish Goplakrishnan and Savera Dsouza in Endure Category, (leading the 2014 INTSD Rally Championship), the Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare 2014, will see participation from regions like Nashik, Manali, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala, Kolkata etc.
