Road Safety & Maruti Suzuki

According to a report compiled by International Road Federation, India loses close to about Rs. 100,000 Crore (Rs One lakh Crore) every year in road accidents. In terms of fatalities, around 160,000 lives are lost annually in road accidents. While India has only 1 per cent global vehicular population, it still accounts for over 10 per cent road fatalities, at a global level. Interestingly 78 per cent of road accidents are caused due to driver's fault.

Maruti Suzuki believes that improving road safety and minimizing fatalities & injuries is a need of the
growing and modern society. To meet this social need Maruti Suzuki operates its Road Safety initiatives at two levels as a Corporate Social Responsibility.

Maruti Driving Schools: These neighbourhood driving schools called Maruti Driving Schools (MDS) are set up in partnership with Maruti Suzuki's dealer partners. Currently over 200 Maruti Driving Schools operational across the country.
IDTR: Maruti Suzuki has set up IDTR's in collaboration with state governments under the Privete Public partnership (PPP) model. These are larger institutes with their own driving tracks. With the Rohtak IDTR, Maruti Suzuki manages 6 IDTRs (Two each in Haryana, and Delhi NCR, one each in Uttarakhand and Gujarat).
The MDS and the IDTR driving training models are supported by a robust curriculum for driving training and advanced driving simulators. While the MDS focuses on personal car driving, the IDTR additionally trains drivers for commercial driving including trucks, buses and other heavy motor vehicles and taxi & three-wheelers.

With this special infrastructure in place, the Company has in a small way institutionalized driving training in the country and brought in international best practices to the Country. This training infrastructure at MDS and IDTR serves as a benchmark of driving training in the country.
Maruti Suzuki,s experience for Road Safety Training
Maruti Suzuki has been working on road safety since year 2000, with the first IDTR in Delhi.
In 2008 the Company gave a formal structure to its road safety initiatives through its flagship National Road Safety Mission (NRSM) programme.
Under its National Road Safety Mission, Maruti Suzuki has successfully trained over 500,000 people in three years under its flagship road safety initiative. As a special gesture, 140,000 trainees out of these have been sponsored by Maruti Suzuki.
Incidentally, the 500,000th trainee was from Sirsa Haryana. Mrs. Magan Kanwar of Sirsa learnt driving training from the MDS at M/s Shakti Motors Sirsa.
Maruti Driving Schools Network: Over 200 Maruti Driving Schools (with dealers).
Institute of Driving and Traffic Research: 6 IDTRs across the country (Two each in Haryana, and Delhi, one each in Uttarakhand and Gujarat).
Road Safety Knowledge Centres: To help the local police with traffic management and training, Maruti Suzuki has established Road Safety Knowledge Centers (RSKC) in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Karnal. This new platform of RSKC targets to enhance traffic education and inculcate safe driving habits for commuters in these cities. In addition to existing driving training modules, the centre has been equipped to offer specialized training to traffic violators. Haryana incidentally was the first state to have it.
