Maruti Suzuki has been leading this change with the revolutionary Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology in the Indian market since 2014 with Celerio. The technology has been progressively introduced in other models in the lineup Alto K10, Wagon R, Swift, IGNIS, Dzire and Vitara Brezza.
The AGS technology finds high relevance for Indian car buyers. The preference for high mileage cars, the desire for low maintenance costs and the tiring bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions makes AGS the most suitable technology for the Indian market.
The technology can achieve higher level of fuel efficiency than that of a manual transmission primarily because of optimal gear shifting in automatic. Additionally, the technology is low maintenance because the gearshift is electronically controlled therefore the change in load is gradual, accurate and precise. And with the creep function one can negotiate the heavy traffic condition with relative ease.
Additionally, it allows you to choose the drive mode – manual or automatic. So, you can drive the way you’ve always preferred to.
How Automated Gear Shift (AGS) works?
In the AGS technology a normal manual transmission unit is transformed into an automatic transmission by automating the gear shift without any driver intervention. This is achieved with the help of a Transmission Electronic Controller Unit that operates the Intelligent Shift Control Actuator, an electric-hydraulic actuator that automatically performs the clutch and gear shift operations. This system intelligently assesses the dynamic driving conditions, instantaneous power/torque requirement based on the driver intention and automatically adjusts the gear shifting to give optimal driving pleasure and performance.
Advantages of AGS
• Dual Drive Mode: The technology lets you switch between Automatic and Manual Mode. So, you can choose your drive mode as per your preference. This helps you cruise easily when the traffic is erratic, especially during rush hours.
• Creep function: In D/R mode, the vehicle can move at low speed without pressing the accelerator after releasing the brake pedal. This function is especially helpful in the slow-moving traffic.
• Kick-down function: This function automatically lowers gear to give better acceleration, based on driver request for sudden acceleration.
• Fuel Efficiency: The fuel efficiency of AGS is similar or better than Manual transmission. However, in comparison to conventional automatic technologies, AGS is ~50% more economical, ~17% more fuel-efficient.
Reports show that Maruti Suzuki is currently the largest selling automatic brand, with a count of 5 lakh AGS cars across the length & breadth of the country.
All this proves Maruti Suzuki’s AGS has not only made automatics more efficient and easier to maintain but has also made automatics more accessible. Thereby allowing more & more people to enjoy the joyous experience of driving a car.
