Alto WOW | Kerala | Kerala From an ‘Adventure’ Prism

Zip lining in Kerala - Maruti Suzuki

Kerala has been so closely associated with its picture perfect sights of backwaters, plantations and seaside views that a frequently overlooked aspect comes as a pleasant surprise. It takes a deep dive into all the different corners to turn one’s gaze to the adventure activities that can be experienced in the state.

When Anwesha and Pallav, a young couple from Delhi, set out on a five-day self-driving trip on ‘Wheels of Wander’ by Maruti Suzuki Alto and Outlook Traveller, they were amazed at the outdoor wonders of Kerala. From the mountains of Wayanad to the rivers and beaches, the adventure enthusiasts were thrilled to have awonderful time in ‘God’s Own Country’. Here’s a handy guide on what all can a traveller expect from an adventure point of view.

  • Bamboo Rafting

The Vythiri hills of Wayanad are replete with forest patches and gurgling streams that are tributaries of the Kaveri River. One such stream was the bamboo rafting spot in the middle of an intensely green forest tract.Equipped with life jackets, and orientation by the instructor, the duo stepped onto the raft, which is made by tying bamboo stems together. Off they went down the river but in a slow pace. The river guide explained that a large pole in his hand worked as an oar and also steered the raft down the narrow stream. He explained that bamboo rafting was originally an indigenous transportation method for farmers who used the rafts to transport rice across the river. Malabar Hornbills perched on top of tree canopies around peered down at the activity, as the raft floated easily down the cool water.

  • Zip lining

The Kuruvadweep Island in the region is famous as a picnic spot, but it’s the adventure activities like zip lining and angling that set it apart from any other scenic spot in Malabar. Anwesha and Pallav decided to give zip lining a try. The line was stretched across a vast field with tall bamboo trees in the background. Tied to two high trees on either side, the zip line offered sweeping views and an adrenalin rush to the couple. Since the height wasn’t too high, children can do this as well.

  • Nature Trails

Walks in the hinterlands of Malabar Coast takes one on paths that are shaded with coconut trees and muddy trails that meander through the plantations which are perfect for short hikes. Some of these trails also offer stunning vistas of the backwaters, and run very close to pristine beaches that stretch for miles. Pallav and Anwesha embarked on some of these trails to experience the outdoors. The flora on the forest trails is diverse and extremely green. A number of avian species, insect life and animals have made these natural surroundings their home. The Tholpetty Sanctuary is a great way to witness this. Here, spottingdeer, langurs and occasionally tigers and leopards, is not uncommon.

  • Plantation Walks

Tea estates along with coffee and spice plantations offer an ample outdoor experience for those who like to stroll at a leisurely pace. Anwesha and Pallav chose to explore a spice plantation, where they were amazed at the variety of spices that are grown. They walked through beds of vanilla, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, pepper and other spices. The spices grown in the highlands around Wayanad are exported out from Kannur, Kozhikode and Kochi. As they walked around with the owner of the plantation, he explained how a combination of trees and spice beds ensures that the soil is aerated and free of weeds. They walked amidst the Arecatrees that stood at intervals allowing pepper vines to climb upon them.

Having experienced a few of the outdoor activities, the couple was convinced that Kerala is ideal for both adventure lovers as well as those who like mild outdoor activities.
