Think Diesel and many miss the point, especially depriving the benefits of diesel¿s low operating costs to the segments which should really benefit the most, viz the A and B segments which make up the biggest chunk of the Indian car market.

All that could very well change as Maruti Suzuki is finally due to launch its much awaited Swift Diesel powered by an engine which is on the of the shining stars among small car diesel power plants in the world.

Not only is it powerful and torquey, it is also very silent, smooth and devoid of any vibes, especially at start-up. The smoothness of the power delivery coupled to the almost seamless thrust is evident, whether pottering in traffic in-town or lapping up the miles on the expressways.

For the first time in the country small car buyers will be able to experience and revel in contemporary diesel delights because the advent of this DDiS engine makes all other small car oil burners feel agricultural and archaic.

Swift Diesel - Quite simply the best diesel hatch

So what's like to drive? In a word, fantastic. Making a small diesel car isn't easy. But the seamless, well engineered marriage of the chassis to the motor means the Swift drives like a thoroughbred. Vibrations are well under control and once the motor is warm and you're on the move, its gets better. Passengers are unlikely to be able to distinguish this car from the petrol-powered one from the rear seats. The motor as a sweet-sounding not to it and even when strained near its high redline of 5200rpm, it does not drone too much or get too boomy.

As for fuel economy, expect a figure of around 15kpl in the city. Yes, as high as that. The car has the technology and the tuning for it.

 A new king is born

Maruti has finally taken the plunge by planking one of the best diesel engines in the world in Maruti's best car. The combination is potentially explosive. There is hardly any telling what lies under the hood - diesel or petrol. The cabin is well insulated and even at high speeds, engine noise is not obtrusive. If you have driven the Indica Turbo and liked it, you will fall n love with the Swift Diesel. There is none of the typically nose-heavy diesel car character and the steering feels light and accurate. The gearbox is joy to use; smooth and very precise this coupled with commendable fuel efficiency, will make the Swift Diesel delight to own.

I have driven many cars with engines borrowed from elsewhere and none have come this close to perfection. I V Rao and his gang at MUL R&D deserve a might pat on the back for this achievement.
