Abundance of water,
terraced paddy fields, forests of pine and deodar, snow capped
peaks are the special features of this quaint little hill
station, on the Kangra valley.
The enchanting surroundings and the fascinating sights attract
visitors throughout the year, specially in the summer months.
Palampur lies at a height of 1220 m above sea level. It is
situated in the Kangra valley, amidst the snow capped peaks of
the Dauladhar range in the North West region of Himachal
Pradesh.

The numerous streams criss-crossing
the mountain range, and Bundla river cascading down the mountain
side like a mighty waterfall, presents a spectacular sight of
the hill side. Palampur derives its name from Pulum- a local
word meaning abundance of water, especially during the monsoons.
This hill station has the climatic conditions ideal for tea
plantation. Significantly, it is renowned as the biggest tea
producing centre in North India.
Visitors can indulge in the scenic beauty, or enjoy the
adventure sports that the place offers. There are some
interesting sight seeing spots at short distances from Palampur
which are enjoyable. |

and temples. Built in the 18th century, it is a fortress
with remnants of old halls and palaces and temples. |

Palampur has a number of
temples around it, famous among them being- Baijnath. It
is one of the oldest Shiva temples in the country. Every
year during the Shivratri fair, thousands of devotees
visit the temple and participate in the festivities.
Another significant temple in this area is the Chamunda
Devi temple, situated at a distance of 13kms from
Palampur. There is the BhadalDevi Mandir, in Bhawarna
11kms away which is yet another popular temple in this
area. |

This hill resort is
often visited for the adventure sports that it offers,
especially in the towns of Bir and Billing. Billing is
considered one of the best paragliding sites in the
country. There are numerous trekking routes that one can
trek on, the most common being the Sanghar pass in the
Deodhar range. |
