Towards the Tip - Kanyakumari

The southernmost tip of the country. It is here that the trio - Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea meet. As the water lashes its shores, it is actually possible to distinguish the three by the colour of the water. The uniqueness of the beach is the multicoloured sand.

Situated in the district of Nagercoil, Kanyakumari is replete with temples. Of particular interest is the Kumari amman temple the deity from whom the place derives its name. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvathi. The various legends associated with it tell us the story of the Goddesses quests. Another very famous temple here is the Suchindran temple, known for its repository of art treasures.

Standing majestically above the waters off the coast is the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial. It is here that Swami Vivekananda meditated and developed his philosophy. It's a short boat ride from the shores. This memorial is a must see for all those who visit Kanyakumari. Situated on a rocky islet is the gigantic 133 feet statue of the Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar. This statue is one of the biggest statues in Asia.

The spectacular sight of sunrise sunset and moonrise over the waters is worth watching. Particularly on full moon days, when moon rises and sun sets at the same time, on either side of the horizon.
