Sariska - A Wildlife Encounter |

Wild
animals, exotic birds, migratory birds, crocodiles, thickets of
dhok trees, and above all the elusive tiger- Sariska is home to
them all. The impressive array of animals include sambhar,
chital, nilgai, four-horned antelope, wild boar, rhesus macaque,
langur, leopard, hyena and jungle cats. The avian species
include quail, horned owl, sandgrouse, grey patridge; golden-
backed woodpeckers and crested serpent eagles, among other
species. The sanctuary offers abundant opportunity to sight a
variety of wild life. |

Located
among the Aravalli hill ranges in the Alwar district of
Rajasthan,
Sariska is actually a wide valley filled with wild life
treasures. The lush green valley is primarily a deciduous forest
filled with dhok, acacia and ber trees. The park is spread over
an expanse of over 866 sq. km. This area was once a hunting
reserve of the royal family of Alwar in Rajasthan. It was
declared a wildlife reserve in 1955. |

Safari
Jeep safaris are the best way to explore the Park and
watch the wild life prowling in the area. Bird watching
is also a fascinating experience here. |

Kankwari Fort
Located within the park on the top of a hillock, is a
Fort exhibiting Mughal architecture. This fort was once
the place where Emperor Aurangazeb imprisoned his
brother, Dara Shikoh due to a feud between them. |

Shiva Temple
Within the precincts of the sanctuary, is a temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva. Neelkanth temple is an ancient
one which is now in ruins. It is open to visitors.
The town of Alwar is close by. There is a palace and
museum which could be visited. |

The Siliserh Lake
On the other end of the park is the lake of Siliserh.
The lake abounds in crocodiles. |

The Royal Palace
Sarisika was once the reserve for the rulers of Alwar.
The palace was built by the Maharaja of Alwar. It has
now been converted into a hotel. |

Kalighat and Salopka
For visitors to indulge in a bit of adventure there are
Hides constructed at strategic locations, to enable them
to watch wildlife at close quarters. Early mornings or
late evenings are the best time to spend here. |

Best Time to visit
Sariska National Park is open to visitors throughout the
year. However certain tracks are closed during the
monsoons and the breeding season. |
