Mudumalai - Amidst the Wilderness

Not just nature enthusiasts, anyone can get impressed and fascinated by the abundant and varied wildlife at Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu.

This impressive wildlife reserve was the first sanctuary in south India. It is in actuality a continuation of the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka, with the river Moyar separating the two states.

Here is a place to enjoy a safari inside the jungles for a good look at wildlife. You can actually spot a number of wild animals like a herd of elephants or a number of langurs which jump from trees, and an innumerable variety of birds like the black woodpecker busily pecking away, the screeching parakeets calling you while the other birds like the barbets, crested hawk eagle , mynas, hornbill and cuckoos, vie for your attention. You can also enjoy elephant rides to explore areas within the jungle inaccessible by vehicles for a closer at some wild animals.

There are a number of accommodations available within certain limits of the sanctuary so you can actually wake up to jungle life and bask in the environs during the day and watch the nights lit up with millions of glow worms.

The drive from Bangalore on well maintained and smooth roads is itself enjoyable. At one stretch towards Mudumalai, there are avenues of bougainvillea which form fascinating natural archways as if welcoming you.

While the sanctuary can be visited any time of the year, the best time to visit is between February and June when water dries up and the animals come out in search of food and water. This is the time you can spot some rare animals.
